Cuba Reflections: The Plan
As I continue to go through my hand-written notes taken during two weeks in Cuba, I'm beginning to formulate a publishing plan for this blog. Here is a tentative outline of what I intend to share with the world on the topic of Cuba.
The Modern American Traveler: Tourism & Privilege on Display
An examination of the nature of travel in the modern world as an American citizen visiting a “Third World” nation as a special status tourist.
Thoughts on Traveling in Groups
An exploration of reflections on traveling on a group tour, something new to me and, I think, particularly interesting in Cuba’s emerging dual economic system and (relatively) sheltered and controlled interaction with foreigners.
Impressions of Cuba Today
My thoughts on life in Havana, food, music, Art, culture, and other topics relating to life in the capital city.
Two Systems: Modern Cuban Economics
A few experiences highlighting the unique (or nearly so) dual monetary system driving the Cuban economy, its reliance on foreign tourism and the rising inequities inherent in this evolving landscape.
Culture & (gasp) Politics
My from the hip analysis of the state of the Revolution in Cuba today, as well as a few thoughts on ways culture and political discourse are both flourishing and floundering.
Two Voices of Cuba: Daily Life From Different Perspectives
Recalling the thoughts of Cubans I encountered along with the perspectives of dissidents and other critics of Cuban style socialism.
Cultural Learning for Sustainable Business
Some thoughts and questions on what leaders can learn from the ingenuity, creativity and pragmatism practiced in Cuba under conditions of moderate to extreme scarcity of resources.
All of these forthcoming posts will be my thoughts alone, biased as they may be, and no doubt containing many holes, oversights, assumptions, false impressions and simply uninformed observations. I make no claims of expertise on Cuba. My interest is in sharing what I found as I traveled a small segment of the country, looking for opportunities to observe businesses in operation, meet Cubans and other travelers, and witness the mystery of this island first hand.
My goal is to post one reflection per week beginning this week and continuing through early September. Feel free to post any questions you have for me along the way.
** UPDATE: 11:26 pm 7/19/11 - Also thinking about a few anecdotal reports on the restaurant and food scene, urban agricultural programs, classic automobiles and car culture, the state of the environment, thoughts on the future and a short walk through the valley in near Viñales. And probably more.
